Over the past 90 years many a Fromm family member have been referred to as a 'character' of some sort. Take Charlie and Minnie for example, who founded the TeAro Estate vineyard by planting Semillon and Shiraz back in 1919 with their bare hands and the use of a single crow bar. Their strength of character has filtered through each generation thereafter with a sense of pride and love for the land and the vines. It is our ancestors that have inspired our tag - 'It takes great characters to make great wines', and, in the 3 generations since dear Charlie and Minnie, we have continued what they started almost a century ago.
Since that time, under the guidance of 2nd and 3rd generation family members Ron and Trevor, the TeAro vineyard portfolio has grown to some 58 hectares including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Pinot Gris, Shiraz, Viognier, Merlot, Semillon, Mataro and Tempranillo. In 2001, the original Hausler property, fondly referred to as 'Sugarloaf', where 2nd generation Fromm family member Fay (nee Hausler) was born and raised, was purchased by the Fromm family. This vineyard and grazing property is now managed by 4th generation family member, Ryan.
Until 2001 the two properties harvested their entire crops for the larger wineries in the region; however it was in this very year that Trev's curiosity got the better of him, and he decided to bottle a tonne of Shiraz for the local football club, family and friends. Over the past 8 years the quantity produced under the brand TeAro Estate has slowly increased, and in 2006, under the direction of Todd Rowett, the family undertook a total rebranding, focusing on capturing the true characters behind the wines and in the wines themselves.
Heading into the next phase of TeAro, led by Trev, Barb, Ryan, Todd and Kelly, alternate varieties are being trialed in the vineyard, Ryan and Todd are taking a more active role in the wine making practices and a Tasting Room has recently opened in the main street of Williamstown.
